6 unknown tips to optimize your WordPress website

There are different ways to optimize your website’s performance. Many of these solutions, such as caching, limiting the amount of plug-ins, using CDN or compressing images, are well-known. But less known ways to boost the performance of your WordPress websites exist as well. We’ll give you a few unknown tips to make your website faster and more user-friendly.
2. Combine images into sprites
It is well-known that large images have a negative impact on the loading times of a website. Besides resizing images, you can also add multiple static images together into a sprite. A sprite is a two-dimensional image or animation that is an integrated part of the entire graphical image. Using sprites has two major advantages. The end users need less connections to your servers, while the total size of the image files decreases. Combining images into sprites does not influence alt tags and image titles.
Spriteme is a tool that allows you to combine images into a sprite. The tool will start as soon as you reach your own website and will advise you about which images can be combined. Once you have filled out the right settings, the tool will create the sprite automatically and write the necessary changes for your CSS. Now you just need to upload the sprite to your own server and to adjust the location of the images.
3. Combine codes
If your website is hosted at Savvii, you don’t need to consider this. This tip is only valid if your site doesn’t support HTTP/2.
4. Use few external scripts
Calling external scripts is often an extra strain on the server. Try to limit the use of external scripts and only use tools like Google Analytics.
5. Compress your files
The amount of data you send to the end user also influences the performance and speed of your WordPress website. It is a good thing you can also influence this. We all know zip files, which compress normal files for faster data transfer. With gzip you can also compress entire websites. This way the amount of data that is sent will be smaller, which saves the server a lot of work and makes your site much faster. Gzip is already by default installed on all Savvii servers.
6. Choose light themes
Choosing a theme is also important if you want to get the most out of your WordPress site. There are many beautifully designed themes available for WordPress. Many of these themes feature sliders, widgets and other dynamic elements, offering a broad range of functionalities and design options. The downside is that all these extra elements also have a negative impact on your website’s performance and speed. Because of this, try to choose a light theme and do not add too many dynamic elements. The standard WordPress theme is a nice lightweight theme offering many design possibilities. You can also choose a framework like Genesis, which takes the speed of a website into account.
