As a web designer and/or marketer you don’t want to be distracted by peripheral issues such as hosting issues. The focus should be on your core business: developing websites and providing marketing services. Of course it’s also nice to take a little extra turnover with the resale of hosting packages. This is exactly what Wouter Markvoort, owner Buro Bedenkt, was looking for in a new hosting provider.
Searching for the right hosting provider
It is mid-2018. Wouter calls to find out if we can do something for him. He has been struggling for some time with finding the right hosting provider. He asks if we are the provider that’s able to give him more support. “As a website developer and designer, I have an eye for design and marketing. Unfortunately, my technical insight is somewhat less. So I have no IT background. Often things went wrong here with my previous hosting provider. When there were problems with a site, it often took a lot of time to find out the cause of the problem. I build all my websites with WordPress. That’s why it quickly became clear to me: if I want to be helped quickly, I have to look for a specialised WordPress hosting provider.”
Growth by reselling hosting
Since Buro Bedenkt made the switch to Savvii, the company has grown by 12.5%. This growth has been set in motion mainly because there is more time available for core activities. Wouter tells: “Savvii relieves us in the areas of updates, backups, php settings and server security. This gives us at Buro Bedenkt more time to do what we do best: develop websites and develop creative ideas. Our product range has also been expanded. For example, video editing is one of the new marketing services we provide. All in all, hosting problems are solved more quickly, we have less need to look after website updates and we can use our time more productively.”
Buro Bedenkt currently derives 35% of its total turnover from hosting. The certainty of this recurring income means that the company can invest. This helps to expand the product range and the growth of the company. “Reselling hosting provides certainty. A piece of fixed income. Because I already know that this part of the turnover comes in at the beginning of the month , I can invest. Personnel costs, for example, are one such thing. With fixed income, these costs are covered and easier to bear – perhaps also for the future when new employees are hired. That way, I can take more risks. Introducing a new service, for example. You don’t know if this will go well. If not, I run less risk because I can fall back on my fixed income from hosting.”
Changing hosting provider
Changing your hosting provider is not a small step. Apart from this step for yourself, you also have to convince your clients. During the switch to Savvii, Wouter asked his customers whether they were happy with this. Ninety percent of his customer base remained after the switch. “During the transition, we were helped by Savvii. I personally called all my large customers and e-mailed the smaller customers. On our website, a page went live with the information about the transition. In consultation with Savvii, I was able to arrange a deal for doubting clients. They were able to participate free of charge for a month. Due to the improved performance of their websites, this doubt quickly disappeared and they became a fan of Savvii’s hosing. Only a few small non-commercial customers dropped out – like the choir from around the corner with a little website that barely has traffic.”
Because Savvii, as a managed WordPress hosting provider, takes a lot of work off your hands, hosting is more expensive than with a budget provider. As a reseller, you will of course receive a purchase discount.
