How we make it easy to back up your WordPress website

Regular backups are one of the most important measures you can take to keep your WordPress website secure. Losing your data, whether it’s a copy of your website before a plugin update, or customer records in WooCommerce, would cause you big problems.
That’s why we backup all WordPress websites hosted on our servers every single day. We are often asked about our backup system, so here’s a quick guide to WordPress backups and Savvii.
A backup of your WordPress site is usually split into 3 main components: the code, the database and the files. All of these components should be backed up regularly and we do this daily for all websites on our platform.
When are backups done?
We initiate backups every night at around 01.00 AM GMT. The exact time we back up your site will vary – not all backups take place at the same time, nor is there a set time.
This is because most websites change every day, with new blog posts, uploads in the media library or products to a WooCommerce shop which all contribute to increasing the total backup size.
Where are backups stored?
We’ll never be able to answer this question precisely because we use Amazon S3, which stores data in the cloud. This means the actual location of the data can change, yet the chances of data loss are currently at 0.000000001%. We can say that the backups are usually saved to a server close-by the actual web server. Many backups are stored in Ireland. Backups can also be stored in Germany.
This service allows us to easily store and retrieve data. All of this takes place encrypted, so data interception is impossible. We use the same system when you create a snapshot backup.
Why do we do it this way?
If you save backups on the same web server as your live website, there’s no way to reach any of your data if something happens to that server.
Storing in an independent location as we do means that if something happens to your live site you will still have a backup, and if something happens to the backup, you’ll still have your live site.
We initiate backups at night because website traffic levels are usually lower.
The use of WordPress backup plugins
Our backup strategy makes a backup plugin redundant in most cases. But if your data is absolutely essential, you can go for a double insurance by using a plugin. This will save your data elsewhere. This can also be useful if you’re looking to keep versions older than 14 days.
Plugins come with a serious drawback: they can have a noticeable impact on your back end performance. After all, the entire backup process is done within WordPress, which takes up a lot of resources. This can noticeably slow down your website, depending on its size.
If you absolutely must use a secondary backup strategy, you’ll find some reliable options with UpdraftPlus, BlogVault or BackWPup. These plugins offer a lighter weight alternative to more extensive maintenance tools like ManageWP, InfiniteWP or MainWP if you only need to create backups.
All offer the same basic functionality in the free version, but features available with a premium licence vary.
